Claiming homelessness – Under current law you can approach your local authority if it is unsafe for you to remain in your home due to domestic violence. The Council is obliged to offer you temporary accommodation while they carry out their assessment or give you a decision on your application on the day. Housing law states that, ‘It is not reasonable for a person to continue to occupy accommodation if it is probable that this will lead to domestic violence or other violence’. Violence means violence or threats of violence from another person, which are likely to be carried out.

Rights of Women: Guide to Domestic Violence and Homelessness
This guide sets out your housing rights if you are experiencing domestic violence and are currently living with your abuser. It also looks at the legal options which are available if you can no longer stay in your home and need to find somewhere else to live.

St Mungo’s
St Mungo’s offers confidential support and advice to those at risk of becoming homeless.

Shelter
The UK’s largest housing charity, gives information on housing rights, homelessness and state benefits. They also have a useful guide regarding homelessness and domestic abuse

Citizen’s Advice
Your local Citizens’ Advice Bureau (CAB) provides free, confidential and independent advice, including advice on housing. The website has information in Welsh, Bengali, Chinese, Gujarati, Punjabi and Urdu, as well as English, and allows you to locate your nearest CAB.

Stonewall Housing
Provides housing advice to LGBT victim/survivors of domestic abuse across London

Homeless Link
Homeless Link is the national membership charity for organisations working directly with people who become homeless in England. It works to make services better and campaign for policy change that will help end homelessness.

Homelessness Act 2002
Legislation giving provision about the functions of local housing authorities relating to homelessness and the allocation of housing accommodation in law.

British Red Cross

Civil Legal Advice

Project 17
Project 17 works to end destitution among migrant children, by working with families experiencing exceptional poverty to improve their access to local authority support. They can support women who have NRPF to access support from social services if they have children who should be supported under Section 17.

Switchboard – the LGBT+ Helpline

Free, unbiased, independent service set up by government.

Money Advice Plus
Run the Financial Support Line for Victims of Domestic Abuse in partnership with SEA. Offer advice for survivors supporting around debts, benefits and budgeting.

National Debtline
Offers information and advice on debt.  Their website has an information pack, a personal budget section, factsheets, and debt advice.  They have access to Language Line.

Department for Work and Pensions
Provides information on all state benefits, alphabetically, with advice on how to find and get in touch with your local Job Centre.  You can download information leaflets and claim forms from the website.

Citizens’ Advice Bureau

Provide information and support on a broad range of financial issues, including benefits, debt and employment.

Advice Now
Provides information on a number of areas, including benefits, housing, employment, living together and separating.  They provide leaflets to download, and link to a wide variety of other useful websites.

Single Parents
Includes information on welfare benefits, childcare, the pros and cons of paid work versus voluntary work, full-time parenting or going back into education.

Shelter
Provide advice about money issues related to housing.

Child Poverty Action Group
Work on behalf of the more than one in four children in the UK growing up in poverty. The Child Poverty Action Group have set up a new free nationwide Survivors Welfare Advice Project (SWAP), which can advise professionals working with domestic abuse survivors on issues relating to their benefit claims and entitlement.

Endeavour Project
Project to fund and find temporary homes for the pets of families escaping domestic abuse. Covers the Northwest of England.

Mayhew Animal Centre
Area covered: London, Hertfordshire and Essex
Provide shelter and care for the pets of people in crisis for short periods of time.

Refuge4Pets
Refuge4Pets provide a pet fostering service across Devon and Cornwall so that victims of domestic violence and abuse can escape to access safety and support before being reunited with their much loved pets.

Animal Samaritans
Foster carers are available to provide temporary care until a suitable, permanent home can be found. (South-East London and South-East England)

The Cinnamon Trust
The Cinnamon Trust provides short term care for animals belonging to elderly pet owners who are going into hospital or moving to residential accommodation where they are unable to take their pets. The Trust also provides long term care for pets whose owners have died and for terminally ill pet owners.

Feline Fine Foundation
Provide emergency foster placements for women going into refuge in Bristol, Bath and Surrounding areas

Victim Support
Victim Support give free and confidential help to victims of crime, as well as their family and friends. You don’t have to report a crime to the police to get help and you can get support at any time, whenever the crime happened.

Silent Solution
This is an option for women if they need the police but are unable to talk. If 55 is pressed by the caller after dialling 999, the system will detect this and the call handling agent will be notified. The call handling agent will then transfer the call through to the relevant Police Force area as there is an indication of genuine emergency.

Emergency SMS
The emergencySMS service lets deaf, hard of hearing and speech-impaired people in the UK send an SMS text message to the UK 999 service where it will be passed to the police, ambulance, fire rescue, or coastguard. Simply by sending an SMS message to 999 you can call for help and the emergency services will be able to reply to you. You will need to register your mobile phone before using the emergencySMS service.

Victims Code
Explains the rights you can expect to receive as a victim of crime. The Victims’ Code applies to all criminal justice agencies, including the police, Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), Courts Service and the Probation Service.

Non-Contact Portal
This service can stop victims of crime getting unwanted letters, phone calls and other messages from a prisoner.

Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC)
Oversee the police complaints system in England and Wales. They investigate the most serious matters, including deaths following police contact, and set the standards by which the police should handle complaints.

Paladin
