Tackling and Preventing Domestic Abuse: Certificate

Duration: 10 days training
Cost: £2084 for members and £2,315 for non – members
The Certificate in Tackling and Preventing Domestic Abuse is a nationally recognised qualification and has been endorsed by the Home Office as suitable for the Independent Domestic Violence Adviser (IDVA) role.
What does the course cover?
The Certificate comprises four units:
- Understanding domestic and sexual abuse within a social and historical context
- Understanding child protection in the context of domestic and sexual abuse
- The role of the domestic and sexual abuse practitioner
- Domestic and sexual abuse partnerships and a coordinated community response
The Certificate course is adaptable and accommodates for differences in service provision or legislation in different localities.
Who is this training suitable for?
To undertake the Certificate, you are required to be in a paid or voluntary role with at least six months of experience working with survivors in the domestic and sexual abuse sector.
Units 1 and 2 also require a workplace observation to be carried out. We are happy to discuss this prior to your booking should you require.
It is suitable for:
- Refuge workers (including managers)
- Independent Domestic Violence Advisers (IDVAs)
- Family workers
- Children workers
- Outreach workers.
The course is particularly suitable if you have worked in the sector for some years and now wish to have your knowledge and expertise recognised by a formal qualification.
It is also appropriate for those who have completed the Award in Tackling and Preventing Domestic Abuse and wish to progress further.

Please note that some of these courses are running completely remotely via zoom and the others are running in a hybrid delivery with Unit 1 being delivered face to face in various locations and units 2 & 3 & 4 via zoom. Please ensure when applying you’ve picked the most appropriate course.

Registering your qualification
Once you have achieved the Certificate, you will have the choice of joining our Register of Practitioners as a Registered Domestic Abuse Prevention Advocate (R- DAPA). This gives you access to a range of specialist resources for continued professional development.
Alternatively, you can register using your current professional title e.g. Registered Domestic Abuse Children’s Advocate (R-DACA) or Registered Independent Domestic Violence Advisor (R-IDVA).
