Women’s Aid responds to Ministry of Justice electronic monitoring tag announcement

Farah Nazeer, Chief Executive at Women’s Aid, comments:

“We know from our work with survivors of domestic abuse that the end of a relationship does not mean the end of the abuse, which instead can escalate and become life-threatening. The Ministry of Justice announcement that perpetrators who pose a risk upon leaving prison will wear electronic monitoring tags is a welcome step forward in keeping survivors safe.

“For this scheme to be successful however, it is vital that the needs and safety of survivors are centred. Parole and police officers must also undergo thorough training delivered by specialist organisations, in order to fully understand the complexities of domestic abuse and the danger that perpetrators can pose to survivors, even after they leave prison.”
