Women’s Aid statement in response to Istanbul Convention passing Third Reading

Friday 24th February 2017

Polly Neate, Chief Executive of Women’s Aid, said:

“Today we are one step closer to a major victory for the rights of women experiencing violence and abuse. It’s fantastic that political support for the Istanbul Convention is gaining such momentum. Much of the credit for this belongs to grassroots campaigners like IC Change, who have worked tirelessly to help people recognise what a great opportunity this is. We would like to thank all 138 MPs who showed their support today, and the survivors and campaigners who urged their MPs to back the bill.

At a time when specialist domestic abuse services are struggling to keep their doors open, and local authorities are regularly making short-sighted decisions to decommission them, the convention makes clear that these life-saving services must continue to be funded.”
