Women’s Aid response to Istanbul Convention Bill

Friday 16th December 2016

Following today’s debate in Parliament on the a bill to ratify the Istanbul Convention, 135 to 2 MPs voted to pass the bill.

Polly Neate, Chief Executive of Women’s Aid, said:

“We welcome the Government’s commitment to ratification of the Istanbul Convention. It sends a clear message to the world that the UK takes ending violence against women seriously, and will protect specialist domestic abuse services – such as those run by Women’s Aid members all over the country – as a priority.

“As the shocking statistics from the Femicide Census prove, there is no room for complacency when it comes to tackling and preventing violence against women. Today marks a milestone in the UK’s efforts, and is a positive way to end what has been, politically, a very difficult year. We celebrate the work of so many dedicated campaigners, including our fellow Women’s Aid federations and IC Change. Our combined efforts have ensured that the Istanbul Convention has really been on the political agenda in 2016. This will create a step change for women experiencing violence and abuse in the UK.”
