Women’s Aid applauds work of IKWRO as first specialist women’s refuge Middle Eastern and North African women opens today in London

Friday 1st May 2015

Polly Neate, Chief Executive of Women’s Aid, said:

“We are thrilled that the first specialist refuge for Middle Eastern and North African women opens today in London. As Women’s Aid has been highlighting in our SOS campaign, refuges for women are under threat up and down the country, due to widespread funding cuts and poor commissioning practices – so to be able to open in the face of this crisis is extraordinary.

“Specialist refuges for women from Black and Minority Ethnic backgrounds are among the most at risk: we hope this new service marks a turning point in the understanding that generic, one-size-fits-all services simply aren’t good enough. What is urgently needed is an approach based on meeting women’s needs and building on their strengths and resources. We applaud the work of IKWRO and hope this new refuge will mark a new recognition of the need for these life-saving services.”
