‘The Fresh Crisis Threatening Refuges’: our Chief Executive Polly Neate announces our startling new statistics
Monday 5th September 2016
Today, on the two-year anniversary of our SOS: Save our Services campaign, we reveal the fresh crisis threatening to decimate our refuges. In partnership with Welsh Women’s Aid, we have startling new statistics that show that 67% of refuges in England are facing closure. 69% in Wales are facing closure too.
Why is this happening? Because planned changes to the housing benefit cap – a vital source of income for refuges – means that most will lose so much income that they cannot stay open. And this crisis is happening against the backdrop of the trial of Helen in The Archers. Never has the fate of a survivor of domestic abuse been so high-profile, so talked about.
You can read more about the crisis in my piece for the Huffington Post. And, you can read our full press release with Welsh Women’s Aid here. Please support us as, again, as we battle to save our services. We owe it to all the Helens out there.
