Why do we send flowers to our friends, our family? To let them know we’re thinking of them, and that we care. Whatever the reason – birth, death, an engagement, or simply to cheer someone up who’s had a bad few weeks – sending flowers is an act of love and respect. It lets the recipient know that they are special.
At Women’s Aid, we work with thousands of survivors a year. Many of these women have not felt special for a very long time. It’s hard to feel special when your self-esteem has been eroded. It’s hard to believe that people care when someone you should trust more than anyone destroys your sense of self. It’s hard to feel pretty if you’re putting on a brave face and covering up your bruises, because who’s going to believe you anyway?
Women’s Aid works very hard to empower survivors, to help them look forward to their future and helping them access the support they need on the way. When they arrive at one of the services that make up our federation – group support, counselling, help for their children, a refuge – the skilled and specialist workers help them to understand and build upon their own strengths and resources, and build their self-esteem and empower them. This means that when they leave our services they can lead fulfilling, independent lives. This approach is called Change That Lasts. ‘Feeling special’ isn’t just a cliché. Neither is ‘empowerment’; it’s recognising and celebrating what makes each unique woman special.
In this spirit, we are thrilled that the gorgeous florist Bloom & Wild and the brilliant online magazine Refinery 29 UK (‘where style meets substance’) collaborated to create this stunning bouquet, the Refinery 29, with 10% of the proceeds going to Women’s Aid. These beautiful blooms will brighten up the life of a survivor of domestic abuse, at no extra cost to you.
So, if you’re planning send a bouquet to your mum for her birthday, or your friend for their new job, or to your sister for her new baby – please make that bouquet the Refinery 29. The bouquet is limited-edition, and is being sold until Friday 20th May (last delivery is on the 21st).
Celebrate someone you love. Make them feel special, and while you’re doing it you can help us make a survivor feel special too.
