AVON and Women's Aid Empowering Women Awards 2010

In association with Marie Claire

The Judging Panel

Sarah_BrownSarah Brown – Women’s Aid Patron
“I am proud to join the panel of judges for the Empowering Women Awards, and ask that you  nominate any inspiring women who have survived an abusive relationship, who have worked or volunteered in a direct service for those affected, or who have campaigned to stop this obscenity. The government, the police and the courts can and do a lot, but the greatest difference is so often made by individual women prepared to walk out or speak out and I am very humbled that we can honour them in this way”.

Tana Ramsay – Women’s Aid Ambassador

“My husband Gordon and I first became Ambassadors for Women’s Aid because Gordon’s mum, my mother-in-law, has direct experience of surviving domestic violence. Helen is an inspirational survivor of domestic violence and role-model in our family. I know from hearing about her experiences how difficult it can be to leave an abusive relationship and rebuild your life. However, with the right support, women who have experienced domestic abuse can go on to lead safe and happy lives with their families. This is why the Empowering Women Awards are extremely important, because they celebrate the achievements of both survivors and the people who help them to survive. I am proud to be a part of the judging panel.”

Reese_WitherspoonReese Witherspoon – Avon Global Ambassador
“Domestic violence affects one in four women in the UK, and many more are suffering in silence. It’s so important that we find a way to reach out in every community and offer our understanding, protection and support. I’m proud to be part of the Avon and Women’s Aid Empowering Women Awards, drawing attention to the bravery of some incredible women who have stood up against domestic violence, and celebrating the achievements of others who are determined to end this debilitating pandemic”.

Anna_Segatti
Anna Segatti, Avon President of UK and ROI
“Domestic violence is a hidden crime that affects more women than most people could ever imagine. The reality is that two women a week are killed by a current or former male partner. The launch of the Empowering Women Awards not only raises awareness of this horrific issue, but also provides an opportunity to recognise the bravery of those who have suffered and celebrate the achievements of others who are determined to help end abuse. As the company for women, Avon is committed to supporting this cause, and we are pleased to offer a £10,000 grant as part of the Grass Roots Hero award. We hope that this money will make a real difference and improve the lives of women who are victims of this crime. We truly believe that if you empower women you can change the world.”

Nicola_HarwinNicola Harwin CBE, Chief Executive, Women’s Aid
“Since being established in 1974, the Women’s Aid national network of domestic violence services has supported and protected millions of women and children, and we know first hand that domestic violence workers, campaigners, and activists save lives. This is why we are launching the Empowering Women Awards; to celebrate the incredible work that happens every day throughout the country to protect abused women and children. We are also looking to acknowledge the achievements and bravery of women who have survived abuse, and who have gone on to inspire others. If you know an incredible woman who you feel deserves to receive an Empowerment Award nominate them now.”
