Study of abuse and neglect of older people, by National Centre for Social Research (June 07).
In Women's Aid's experience, women of all ages experience domestic violence.
It is often assumed that domestic violence is experienced mainly by younger women, and that older women's experiences can be put under the heading of "elder abuse". However, a recent prevalence study of abuse and neglect of older people found that the majority of inter-personal abuse was perpetrated by those living in the same households as their victims.
There are no firm data about older women's experience of domestic violence, as the British Crime Survey does not include those over the age of 59 (Povey ed., 2005, 2008; Walby and Allen, 2004 - see Bibliography).
