Did you know, 30% of domestic violence starts in pregnancy? (Lewis and Drife, 2001, 2005; McWilliams and McKiernan, 1993 - see statistics). Domestic violence has been identified as a prime cause of miscarriage or stillbirth, and of maternal death during or immediately after childbirth.
The Department of Health now supports routine enquiry by trained healthcare professionals to enable pregnant women to disclose any abuse they are experiencing, so they can be signposted to specialist support services.
